EDUCATION

Solid foundations, a mind open to the world.

Knowledge is the starting point, not the destination. At Bloom Academy, a private primary school at Slobody 1 in Košice, we help children understand connections, ask questions, work together, use technology wisely and gradually take responsibility for their own learning.

Education built on the new cycle system

We are responding to the new curriculum reform by building our teaching around three cycles that follow children’s development far more naturally. Although the formal system still divides school into primary and lower secondary levels, the cycles let us teach with deeper connections and without pressure to memorise quickly. As the reform is being introduced gradually, Cycle 1 is now fully in place. Higher grades are still formally divided into the two levels, but we already teach them in the spirit of the reform, with new methods and a modern approach to assessment.

Formative assessment: feedback that truly helps children move forward

At Bloom Academy, we don’t see grades as a final verdict but as a guide. We believe real learning happens when children know exactly where they are, what they have already achieved and what they can do next to keep growing. That’s why formative assessment is part of every cycle at our school.

Feedback that makes sense

Instead of harsh judgements, we talk to children and parents in concrete terms. We show pupils their strengths, value their effort, progress and strategies, and give constructive guidance where something needs fine-tuning.

Mistakes as the best teacher

We don’t see mistakes as something negative – they are a natural and valuable part of learning. We help children lose their fear of failure and look at problems calmly: “Let’s see why it turned out this way and how we can do it next time.”

Building intrinsic motivation and self-reflection

We don’t want children to work just for a grade. Step by step, we teach them to assess their own work, notice their progress over time and set their own small goals. What matters most is that each child beats their own best, not the classmate sitting next to them.

A safe environment for every pupil

This approach creates a safe, stimulating atmosphere in our classrooms. Children are heard and accepted, aren’t afraid to ask when they don’t understand, and enjoy coming to school.

I understand.

We don’t teach isolated facts – we help children see how things connect.

I try it out.

What children experience and try for themselves becomes real skill.

I reflect.

Feedback shows progress and where to go next.

Cycle 1 (Grades 1–3)

A safe start and solid foundations

Children’s first years at school are built on a safe, welcoming environment where they discover the joy of learning without unnecessary pressure. We focus on solid foundations in reading, writing and maths, using modern, proven approaches. English starts in Grade 1 with the playful, natural Jolly Phonics method, which uses sounds, actions and the senses. We support the development of thinking skills, attention and healthy friendships, so that every child experiences success and gains confidence they can rely on.

Cycle 2 (Grades 4–5)

Deeper connections with the real world

This cycle is a smooth bridge between the basics and deeper exploration. Instead of isolated facts, learning connects to real issues, everyday situations and project work. We encourage growing independence, critical thinking, reasoning and teamwork. This is also when children broaden their horizons and start a second foreign language, opening doors to the wider world.

Cycle 3 (Grades 6–9)

Responsibility, critical thinking and preparing for the future

The final stage of compulsory schooling focuses on independent, critical and analytical thinking. Pupils learn to take responsibility for their results, decisions and personal growth. We focus on deeper understanding of subjects, more demanding work and reasoning. We prepare them not only for a smooth move to secondary school, but above all for life in a constantly changing world – always with fair and respectful assessment.

After-school club

Our after-school club isn’t a place to park children or just a room to wait for parents. It’s the heart of afternoon life at BLOOM Academy – a safe, relaxed and warm space where children can finally breathe, unwind and share adventures with friends.

We’re open every school day from 6:45 am to 5:00 pm. Younger pupils are welcome, and our door is open to older pupils from the lower secondary level too.

We plan each afternoon carefully so that, after a day at their desks, children find what they need most: a healthy balance between movement, thinking and free play.

01

Relaxation

When mind and soul need a rest

Freedom of choice and respect for each child’s energy come first. After lessons, we don’t push anyone into tasks – children choose what helps them switch off best.

  • Imagination and strategy: role play, LEGO worlds, board games that teach fairness and cooperation
  • Creative studio: free drawing, painting, cutting and modelling
  • Reading corner: a cosy spot with books and magazines, or listening to a story read aloud
  • Time for yourself: free play on the carpet, quiet chats with friends, no rush
02

Outdoor and active play

Switch off your head, switch on your body

Fresh air is the best way to shake off school fatigue after hours at a desk. Whenever the weather allows, we head outside.

  • Outdoor adventures: the schoolyard, playground and climbing frames come alive with games and chasing
  • Team challenges and sport: fun competitions, ball games, seasonal activities
  • On rainy days: the gym becomes a safe playground for coordination games, exercise and dance
03

Homework

With respect for family time

Evenings at home should be for family, hugs and rest, not stress over homework. That’s why we handle homework flexibly and in close agreement with parents.

  • Children who go home early: they can finish homework calmly at home with you, or complete it at school.
  • Children who stay longer: with a staff member’s support, we get most of it done at the club, so you can enjoy free time at home.
  • An individual approach: children with special educational needs get exactly the help they need.
  • Playful and modern: practice through educational games, interactive activities and computer programs children enjoy.

Projects and innovations at Bloom Academy

We combine modern educational trends with values-based education and a strong community spirit. Here’s what makes our school a unique, stimulating place for children:

1. International projects and languages

Erasmus+

European projects open doors for our pupils and teachers. They gain fresh inspiration, discover other cultures and bring valuable experience back to Bloom Academy.

eTwinning

Our pupils connect online with peers abroad. Through shared tasks and digital communication, they naturally develop foreign languages, digital literacy and respect for other cultures.

Jolly Phonics

A proven, popular British multisensory method for teaching English, linking sounds with actions and games. Children learn to read and pronounce with joy, naturally and stress-free.

Computing with Emil

A playful, logical approach to computational thinking from the early grades. Children learn not only to use a computer, but above all to think logically, spot connections and solve problems.

Blended reading (Splývavé čítanie)

Our proven path to fluent reading and deep understanding. The method helps children see how words are built, so they discover the magic of books quickly and with joy.

2. Teaching innovations

Personalised learning

We respect each pupil’s pace, interests and strengths. Every child is different, so we support each one to grow in the way that suits them best.

Creative drama

Drama techniques are a firm part of our school day and programme. Through games, roles and emotional expression, children build self-confidence, empathy and the ability to speak in public.

Working with goals and mistakes

We teach children that a mistake is not a failure, but the most valuable training and an important part of learning. Together we set small, real goals and celebrate every personal progress.

Emotional compass

We put great emphasis on emotional intelligence, self-confidence and a safe environment where every child feels accepted, heard and able to work with their feelings.

Lazy Teacher principles

Our teachers act as guides who deliberately hand responsibility for learning to pupils, leading them towards independence, critical thinking and discovering answers for themselves.

School library

An inspiring, peaceful space children love – for quiet reading, literary moments and building a lifelong love of books.

3. Modern tools and assessment

Progress Map

Our key formative assessment tool, which lets children and parents see real personal growth over time instead of comparing grades with classmates.

Brainquizz

Fun interactive quizzes and brain teasers that train attention, logic and memory and bring friendly competition into the classroom.

Situational drama

Linking drama techniques with real-life situations and moral dilemmas helps children manage class relationships and resolve conflicts.

Weekly reports

Regular, open and honest updates for parents, so you know exactly what your children experienced and learned during the week.

School Parliament (ŽUR)

Our lively school of democracy, where elected pupil representatives help shape the rules, suggest activities and take responsibility for school life.

4. Community, events and volunteering

Theme days

Unconventional, hands-on school days full of colour, costumes, creative tasks and teamwork that link what children learn with real life.

Family webinars

Regular online sessions with experts and school leaders on key topics in modern education, psychology and supporting children at home and at school.

Open Day

A warm invitation for future first-graders and their parents to experience the friendly atmosphere at Bloom Academy, see the school and meet our team.

White Crayon (Biela pastelka)

A traditional charity appeal supporting blind and visually impaired people. We take part wholeheartedly to build real empathy and a willingness to help.
